Colic
Title:
The influence of the gastrointestinal microbiome on infant colic
Objective:
To assess the link between the gut microbiome and the development of infant colic. The aim of this paper is to provide a better understanding of the link between infantile colic and the gastro-intestinal microbiome.
Results:
A specific probiotic strain, Lactobacillus reuteri DSM 17938, was shown to reduce colic in exclusively breastfed infants, strongly suggesting an association between the gastro-intestinal microbiome and colic. Further findings of the study link chronic gut inflammation in infantile colic.
Conclusion:
More randomized controlled trials at the primary health care level, as well in prevention as in treatment, are needed before evidence based recommendations can be formulated.
